installing piston rings

Hi there, I have a question about the piston rings - which way to install them.

LT supplied Teikoku piston rings. One of them have letter "T" and a number 50 on one side. This will go top side. And presumably in the top groove. But other one doesn't have any markings and both sides looks the same. Cross section are the same for both of the rings from what I can see. So which way do I install the second ring? I did a search on internet and some sources say it can be installed either way. Is this true?

BTW, my old rings both have letter "N" on them. And again cross section looks the same. One's got a bigger end gap. I will upload pictures later today. Thanks

Unless you put them in the barrel, how are you measuring end gaps.....

The difference was on used uncompressed rings in picture 1. I fitted new rings in the bore and could slide 0.279mm feeler gauge. So assume ring gap is correct (0.4-0.5 bore size). But what about the piston rings? Now I am starting to think it doesn't matter which way because rings are simple square

I used to own a piston ring uncompressor, but seem to have lost mine years ago

It used to be in the box where we kept the long waits.

Slid the rings into the top of the barrel. Use the piston to push them down 25mm and to keep them square to the barrel. Orientate the gap to the back of the barrel, now measure the gap.

How long are the waits, I had some really long waits that wouldn't fit in our cubbords so I sold them to a taxi firm I know
