magneto pick ups.No spark

Post by spreedio » 10 Oct 2015, 02:43

Hi there i have a mk2 and i have no spark i have replaced the cdi unit with a new chinese one and the voltage reg .My main question is why are there two pickups and 6 notches on the flywheel ? All the bikes ive worked on have one pick up and one notch to to produce one spark per revolution .My plan was to wire up another cdi unit and modify the rc valve to be mechanical driven by cable .Arrrhhhh help.

Check side stand switch, and if removed check that the correct wires have been put together, check the kill switch is working properly, check the ignition switch and wires behind headlight. Is the neutral light lighting up when you are kicking the bike over?

All the lighting and ignition switch has been removed .im left with the kick stand wire coming out of the pgm and i have no idea if it should be earthed or left open and the kill switch has one wire from the pgm and i assume the other needs to be earthed .but looking at the wiring diagram it doesnt look earthed but there isnt any other wires it could attach to at the pgm .Do you know why there is two pickups and 6 notches on the flywheel ? Everything ive seen has one pickup and one notch on the flywheel

It's much more likely to be a wiring problem than anything else. I have a wiring loom for a Mk2 if you want to try that?

as knackered has mentioned sounds like a wiring issue if the regulator has previously gone i wouldn't rule out frazzled wires/Pgm as for the pickups i leave them alone its unfamiliar territory for me

Sounds like a bit of a basket case?
Wiring is bad enough without having someone else chop big lumps out of it before you start.
Good luck but I suspect you will need a meter and a lot of time!!

have faith in her mine was a nightmare when i got it but now its a gem :) just a bit battle scared, i had a similar issue and it turned out to be the loom i suspect it was a frazzled wire as my regulator was dodgy and the PV didn't work. I regularly check my regulator after every hard ride now for heat bubbles
