balance shaft replacement??

Hi, Wondered if anyone had any advice on replacing balance shaft. Is it just a bearing or bush or do you replace whole shaft? Can it be done without splitting cases?? etc.etc. thanks very much for any info given. When I did the fork seals I found some step by step instructions that were spot on. I had a feeling I'd seen something similar for the balance shaft but can't find it now.

Yes it can be done without splitting the cases, as for whether you need to replace the shaft along with the 2 bearings, well that's dependant on how knackered the shaft is! You will only know that once you have taken it out. It is a long time since I have done one, so the following may be slightly wrong (!) but it should give you the general idea.
Remove the clutch case (likely to need new gasket) and then undo the nut on the end of the balance shaft (I think!), while the clutch is on (as you can lock the engine while the clutch is on by using a penny between the gears). Then take the clutch off.
You will need to take the flywheel side cover off as well as this is the side the shaft will slide out from. Tap the shaft out and then tap out the right hand bearing (from the left). Easy up to now, however here comes the fun part! The left hand bearing is a bastard, no other word for it. There is very little to knock it out with (i.e. very little lip as a needle roller) and what ends up happening is you break the bearing case and just leave the outer bearing case in the engine case. I have been involved with 2 in the past and on one we had to use a dremal to cut the case out! On the last one we machined a 'tool' that fitted perfectly so we could knock against it rather than ending up breaking the bearing apart. Anyway once its out check for scoring on the shaft, if there is a lot then replace it, they are about 75 quid. You will need 2 bearings (one ball the other needle) and a couple of seals. Can't remember if you need to remove the flywheel to get the shaft out? If you do it will be obvious, remember you will need a puller. As you are removing the clutch you will need a tool to hold the clutch when tightening it up again when refitting (I made one using an old clutch plate) Have fun, hope this helps

Thanks very much for the reply mate, I'll let you know how it goes! I have an exploded parts diagram to follow your instructions with and they do seem to make complete sense!! Nice to know where to expect problems as well, rather than the Haynes manual \"simply remove the old bearing\" line.
