A few problems
A few problems
Hi all
Finally got to use my AR today all taxed mot'ed etc, in general very impressed but a few questions hopefully some of you can help with
On tickover it "hunts" slightly ie tickover rate not steady, therefore when on the overrun bike is a bit jerky, is this likely to be the pilot jet and if so can i get to this without taking the carb fully off.
One of the fork seals is gone i'm assuming this is why the forks are mega soft or are they fairly soft anyway? Are the forks unique to the AR is see on ebay seals advertised for '89-95 so these must fit the mk 3 i thought this had mostly the same running gear as the AR
Is there a downloadable manual for the AR or even a Haynes type on e available anywhere? I found one manual on this site but i assume it only covers up to MK3
Thats it for now
Thanks

Re: A few problems
O/K the tick over thing seems to be a trait of the A/R i have it on mine .Ignore the manuals settings , it seems to be what works from bike to bike, on mine that's one turn out mixture screw .
Get a tin of that carb /spray cleaner and take out the mixture screw, give it a good spray in situ first .
Getting at the pilot jet can be a proper mare of a job, from memory its a 45 pilot jet they run, some people change this for a leaner 40 jet , but to my mind that can only make the problem worse.
The on the road surging is also an A/R trait, they prefer to be pulling than [coasting--coasty
]
Use honda seals if the forks need doing, on the under side of the fork is an adjuster, follow the instructions on the fork leg ie in is harder , i would expect the oil is probably decidedly second hand by now so a fork service would be a good idea.
A search of topics will pop up a seal replacement guide , which is pretty easy to follow , except for the last step that i was unable to achieve , so assembled the top of fork and then homed the seal into its housing , i think it was penned by "SLIDER"

Re: A few problems
fork seals for cr250 90-92? will fit, but check first. the stantion size is 45mm. Jon
Re: A few problems
Thanks for the replys, it certainly does pull well there seem to be no probs there, so maybe the lumpy tickover is not something i will be able to sort entirely!! Will give it a clean out though as suggested
As for the seals thanks for the tip now even more confused, have found one listing stating Fork Seal Dimensions: 43mm x 54mm x 9.5/10mm for '92/94 model cr and Fork Seal Dimensions: 45mm x 57mm x 11mm for '89-91 model.cr; unfortunately i dont have the means to measure my forks to the nearest mm i assume a micrometer is the only way. Other info i have found suggests that the mk 2/3 and AR forks are the same , is this the case.
One final thing the front sprocket fits on splines then a kind of bar bolts across it on different splines ensuing the sprocket can't come off, there is a bit of movement though is this normal or am i missing a spacer or something to stop this.
aaaaaaaaaaaah the joys of new bike ownership

Re: A few problems
Movement on the gearbox sprocket is normal. It is to allow for lateral movement of the chain.

Re: A few problems
you can use a micrometer to measure the legs but only if you want to be anally exact!. Micrometers are for fine measurements, verniers are what you mean. they are the slidey ones that give a wide size range.
anyway back to the story line, i have noticed a lot of people on this forum say that their forks are 43mm, but from what i can see, the forks (as long as they are usd) are interchangeable, so they should be the same but with different internals, so the stantions will be 45mm and common to most early 90's cr's. I did post a while ago that if any body want it, i have a list of common Honda fork seal sizes, this should give you availability if one size is out of stock.
