Doesnt make you sound "a bit smart", its a good idea!! Saves a lot of fannying when it needs to come off, think im gonna grease mine every week!
Quote from the modifications page of this website.....

''Grease Nipples are often overlooked, yet as our bikes came from the factory with not much in the way of grease in the swingarm and headstock then this mod makes much sense. Next time you replace your swingarm / headstock bearings or seals then take the time to drill a small hole and insert a grease nipple for future lubrication. Once this has been done you will never have to take it apart again. Not sure if anyone has done this for the wheels but if you have please let us know.''

Surely this is easier then taking it out and cleaning/greasing regularly?? Does anyone have any experience, or has anyone put a grease nipple on their headstock/swingarm?

Grease nipples will help you grease the bearings but they won't stop the spindle seizing in the bushes which is what stops the spindle coming out. If you've fitted grease nipples you still need to regularly knock out the spindle, grease it and refit it.

It's a double edge sword, yes it may save some wear, but having done the headstock trick, I was feeling pretty smug, until I had to take the lot apart to replace the head bearings ,[ KDX200] I had a kilo of grease to get rid of before getting near the worn out bearings  , stuck, stickier, than, sticky, the stick, insect.

+1

the most common place for the spindle to seize is to the bushings in the crankcase hence all the horror stories of people cutting up their swingarms - even if you drilled the crankcase and installed nipples in it you would not be able to force sufficient grease into the gap between the spindle and bushing. Bottom line is grease nipples only work with bearings really not bushings.

I reckon its better to take it out anyway, clean it up an put fresh grease in.

When i look back at the horror of gettin it out, when we used the proper stuff, it was actually quite easy. Had to sacrifice the spindle but thats the way it goes. I were treadin softly at first to try an save the nut an spindle, but in the end that wasnt gonna happen.

Wedge the frame, use a solid metal drift, an smash the bugger as hard as poss, it`ll shift in seconds.

I was riding in Wales a few months ago & 2 guys had the same problem, in that their chain was knocked off the rear sprocket by an underwater rock/hole combo. In both cases, the chain flipped up around the front sprocket & between it & the swingarm. The first was sorted by a big guy stepping up on the chain & dragging it back out, but the second one was well & truly fubar'd, almost meeting itself & coming around for a second time...

We wasted over 30mins trying to pull it back down/out, trying to remove the front sprocket, etc, until someone suggested removing the swingarm spindle & moving the swingarm back a few mm. We were done & dusted in 10mins after that & back on the ride. It was an almost-new bike, so it was easy to do this but you all scared the poo out of me with this seized stuff, so I've been in the garage greasing linkage bearings & checking seals. It was only yesterday that I plucked up the courage to attempt the swingarm spindle & I expected the worst as I've owned this '95 Mk3 for the last 5yrs & never touched it before. Heaven knows when it was last moved & I've ridden through all sorts of bogs, puddles, rivers, etc... You get the picture :-o

I was so happy that I burst out laughing, 'cos it undid easily enough & drifted all the way out without any problem. I gave it a little polish to remove a few scabs & slapped it back in, all nice & snug in it's fresh bath of slippystuff. I believe it is now a happy spindle & will relish coming out whenever the need arises... Phew!! :-)
