Chocolate Balance shaft

Post by Eddie Evans » 25 May 2010, 22:29

I rebuilt the engine a couple of thousand Km ago fitting a new balance shaft, needle roller and ball race along with mains etc.
The bike has ran very well but started getting noisy.
Yes you can guess the new shaft now has chatter marks the same as the old one.
I have changed the gear oil every couple of days riding.
Having no idea what is causing this wear there is no way I am forking out the £100++ to replace the shaft and bearings so I have removed the balance shaft drive gear and replaced it with a spacer.
Any ideas what may cause this very quick wear.

Without the shaft spinning the bike runs OK although as expected there is a bit of vibration through the footpegs.
I can live with that as long as bits don't start falling off.

Odd :? .

Is there any looseness to the needle roller bearing fitting :?: .

No the needle roller fitting is a nice tap fit. I made a drift up to knock the old one out and used a small amount of bearing fit when tapping in the new one.
My friend had a lot of problems with his and I suspected that play on the clutch housing needle rollers may have contributed to that so mine were replaced in the rebuild. that that theory out of the window.
