Twiddling my rear shock thingy!

Post by Beanie » 23 Sep 2004, 22:57

Guys,

Sorry for being simple but can you tell me what the cylinder to the right of the rear shock is?

I'm guessing it is used to help adjust the rear shock and it has a brass flat head screw at the top?

How does it work and how is it adjusted?

Cheers,

Beanie

Hi Beanie,

It's a high pressure nitrogen filled chamber, but the shock unit is very basic, and whatever adjustment you do seems to have little effect - on my Mk3 anyway.

I used to ride with it fully clockwise, then tried it fully anti-clock, and the bike did seem to ride bumps slightly better like this, so that's where it is.

There is also the possibility that there is no nitrogen in there anymore ! As the only way to find out is to press the valve, any you do have will be lost, and you then have to take it somewhere specialised to have it re-charged.

There is very little gas in it even when full, but it is at very high pressure.

Regards,

Roger.

True beanie ,,Its under very high pressure so the old car tyre pressure gauge wont work,It'll probably blow the top of it .. Its filled with nitrogen so it isnt effected by atmosferic pressures.Ie , The pressure stays constant. There are places that will refill this chamber but its best to get it done on a service ,, look in the forum search engine for rear shock servicing....
