rear caliper off and brake light

Post by longmoreuk » 10 Apr 2013, 11:42

dont sgo mad at me pls, i know its a stupid question already - fed up with it! The brakes on the thing are doing my head in.

the rear caliper its not working as the disc is still rusty after a run out, thinking a good service of the caliper will help.

In addition - the foot lever doesnt work the brake light and I doubt it will be ok to go through an MOT. Not sure how the chap i got it off got it through. Anyway - can someone take a pic of the rear brake wiring set up for me please so I can try and figure out what goes where.

is there a haynes manual for this bike....I have a workshop book from leisure trail but that doesnt go into detail on lots of bits i need to sort out.

Thanks very much, will download later as I might get in a bit of bother if I try at work!

There is fluid yes and brand new pads put in by the previous owner.

have I bled the brakes, lol! - sorry, that made me laugh, have had a nightmare with the front brake and have bled that to death, need to do the rear but thought its better to strip, clean and rebuild so I know its ok. Havent had the bike long.

On my Mk2 there is a connector with 5 wires going to it behind the rear number board (exhaust side) that is for the rear lights... my brake light was intermittently working... I stripped the front and rear switches down and cleaned them and they were still intermittent :? .. It turned out to be the connector behind the number board...It is quite exposed to water and dirt from the rear wheel.. Try pulling it apart and spray some contact cleaner in it (I used a little needle file on the contacts as as well)... after that they workedok... I ended up changing the connector for a waterproof one... was only a few quid from ebay 8-)

The weak link in the brake light electrical circuit is the rear brake switch. It is truly 1960s technology and very exposed to grim and water. They can be taken apart and cleaned as suggested but much better replaced with a hydraulic switch.

There are no wires to the master cylinder on mine so I am struggling to understand what should go where. Will try and get a pic at some point. Tried to get some brake seals this morning but no luck, will need to order some off eBay or somewhere, then get it back together.

There is a wire and spring that runs from the top of the arch on the brake peddle to the switch.
