Post by Kevin M »

:( my 1990-91 is starting to \"slip\" when i kick start it, feels like a stripped spline or something, any ideas?

I have the same problem. I can't remember who but someone recommended putting a cup full of diesel in the gearbox oil and letting it tick over for a few mins. Then change the gearbox oil. Apparently this cleans all the cr@p from the gears etc. Never got round to doing that but have stripped and rebuilt the engine since. There was no gunk on the gears anyway.... I'm stumped as it still does it now, every 3-4th kick (it takes a few to start !) the thing will just slip, just as you have explained - it feels like the kickstart splines are stripped.
If anyone has any other theories on what it could be then I'm all ears !!

At a half (badly) educated guess its the teeth on the cogs that engage on the kicksart shaft just behind the cover, they only need to be slighty rounded off to start slipping being as kickstart forces are quite high. My 500 had this problem at some point in its life and swapping the cogs for new ones as well as replacing the spring thats behind there sorted it out nicely, pretty sure the crm's got the same setup. You could just try a new spring first (its cheaper!) just to see if that does anyring worthwhile??

All fixed

got a second hand spline, the one that goes into the casing, there are two small cogs that are spring loaded and a few of the teeth were slightly worn, obviously doesnt take much wear for them to slip, slight rounding of teeth will do the trick.

I have found this problem a lot on the older CR's, it is all down to the worn splines on the ratchet. a quick fix is to stretch the spring to force the two parts together more but in the end, replacement is the answer, or bumpstart which is not always practical. Jon
