I have the clutch case cover off now can can see that when the bike is put it gear the centre of the clutch that is torqed
down onto the basket and plates - spins when it's in gear but the basket itself does not?

because the clutch centre is spinning I can't even undo the bolts to get to the plates because it is just spinning round

I managed to undo the nuts and the plates push rod etcare now removed - everything but the basket -
Am I right in thinking the basket itself with the cog attatched behind it should be trurning round when I push the bike forward in gear without the rest of the clutch installed?

From memory ,the clutch basket is driven via another gear wheel from the the primary gear[crankshaft], the drive to the output shaft of gearbox is attained through the fibre and metal plate clutch arrangement
Again from memory it used to be the case that the final part of the clutch assembly, the alli casting that the springs tighten down would only go back in one position, this being identified by two corrasponding dots that had to align.
This may have only been on MX clutch assemblies , but might be worth looking for.
If this is not the case reassemble paying particular attention to the thrust bearing and washer arrangement..

Cheers mate, what are the torque settings for the clutch spring bolts out of interest? - as they are not mentioned in the
LT manual and I am wondering whether I under torqed them at 10 pounds per foot.

and also - sorry for all the Questions are all the plates suppose to be soaked in oil ie the friction and drive plates?

Sorry i don,t have that imfo, but you should feel the washer ground out onto alli post inside the spring when assembled
[just ] .Lock the gear wheel on the back of clutch housing and its drive gear with something reasonably soft[ Krusties tip of an older 2p piece ,check it with a magnet to make sure it is an old style one , willl do the job.
check the clutch actuator arm is fully home ,with the push rods end up against the flat portion on the bottom.
Some oil on all the plates wont do any harm, [wet clutch system].

I had 2 washers installed for some reason that was the problem.
and it is all good. Ladies and gentlemen I am now happy to announce
that I have a working bike! it starts and runs!!!!!

there is only one down side and that is I have some how managed
to strip the sump plug thread, so I need to re tap it and get another plug.

Phew thank feck for that, no thats good to hear scrubs, PTFE tape on sump for now , very carefull its a full strip down again otherwise

Cheers Lads -- Started first kick too which felt fantastic.

I have some PTFE tape on there at the moment. worse thing is - a small peice of the bottom of the crank near the plug
broke away too has - It's not like it has a hole in there or any thing - but just the bit where it pertrudes out into a flat lip
mating surface for the bolt So I am hoping that an engineers place may be able to weld a small bead on then
file down and - re thread it. Only other problem I am having is finding a socket narrow enough to torque
down the swing arm bolt nothing seems to fit in the hole, the scket is too wide for it and it's not exactly a
thick walled socket

get a cheap socket and grind it down to fit - then put it in a box marked 'special tools'...

are you sure the swing arm nut is the right size? a standard socket fits on mine no problem. Jon

I'm gonna check tommorrow that I havent installed the nut on the wrong side of the swing arm in case one recess is wider than the other ,

shaft goes from off side to near side, off side is 17 mm ie head to s/arm bolt, near side 22mm socket should be snug fit in hole and on nut.
