Busman and holiday spring to mind  .
Steve, assuming the bike's not on pre-mix, wouldn't the fuel be neat 2 Star with perhaps a residue of 2T?
Again, does the thing actually spark at the plug when kicked over :?: :?: :?: :?:

FMtB I initially thought that too. Depends on the quantities involved.........

It is sparking at the plug when kicked over, and it is not premix.

When I turn it over by hand now there is still a bit of petrol oil mix being picked up by the crank.

Other thing to do is to take the plug out and with the ignition off push it around with the bike in as low a gear as you can 'comfortably' push. This was my last resort - about 200m should be enough?

Then star with a DRY plug.

There will always be some oil mixture in the crank - depends on the quantity.

Still no go with this bloody thing, I have now stripped it right down and replaced the rings and reeds, new pilot jet cleaned all the carb and all it does when I kick it over is cough and backfire. What the hell next??

Update: After a conversation with a mate at work who used to be a bike mechanic, I have now got it running again.

The conversation went something like this. How's that Honda coming along??

Not very well!
Have you put the stator plate back in the right position?
It hasn't got a stator plate I thought to myself.
But anyway I thought that I would replace the pick up coils to see if they were duff!

While I was there I thought I might as well pull the flywheel off an have a look at that and then BINGO!! The woodruff key that keeps the flywheel in place had disintegrated.
Replaced that and she was away :D :D :D .
£1 fix Doh!!

It might well be it sheared for a reason, I would recommend taking it off again, and lapping in the conical mating faces with some valve grinding paste, make sure you clean every last drop of it.
The stator should hold just on the conical faces, the key way is make sure it's in the right place. I.M.O.

Tried for MoT today, couldn't do it because the website was down, try again tomorrow.
But the bonus is got to give it a blast and while I was waiting I had the pleasure of seeing a HI 500 Kawasaki in immaculate condition. ( I want one).
