M.O.T. Failure

My CRM MK 2 failed it's MOT today....what a p*sser!!
It failed because of too much movement in the rear wheel which requires new bearings. Also the steering is really stiff even without any weight on the bike, again new bearings are recommended for the steering head.
The chap reckons it could cost about £100 just to replace the steering head bearings.
Can anyone confirm to me whether he is taking the p*ss or not.

30 to 40 quid for a set sounds about right ,, Search in the forum here for bearing serial numbers..Think xl400 fit ,,

Get the bearings out and go to a BEARING SHOP not a motorcycle shop or a mixed bearing / hardware sort and if there aren't any numbers on them they can measure them up.
My brother is an MD of a industrial gearbox plant and the bearings cost from 5p upwards.
If you are really struggling send me the numbers and i will ask for cost price and weather he has any.

Hi Celt,
The 'HONDA' part numbers for the steering head bearings and seals are :-
2 x 91015 425 832 (£30/£40) ?
53214 KA3 732 Upper Seal (£4/£5)
53214 KA4 701 Lower Seal (£4/£5)
Or go to any bearing supplier and ask for 2 x 32005X Tapered Roller Bearings (£15/£20 depending on the make) (i think you will still need the HONDA seals as the old ones get fcuk getting them off)
http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/32005x ... -1536.html
If your doing the job yourself? Allow plenty of time as you have to remove most of the front end of the bike! also getting the old bearings off and the new ones on can be a bitch of a job
Good luck
Steve

if thats the case thats probably where most of the money the shop are quoting is going. £100 is probably no more than 3 hrs work + parts
