When setting the AR valve according to the manual, there are two marks one on the alignment plate and one on the cable plate and these should line up. if not you use the cable adjuster to get them to line up, but mine won't, does this mean that the cables are just worn or are there thoer reasons that might cause the problem.

could be just worn but i dont think theres enough tension there to stretch them are you warming the bike up before you try to set it up? of course i could be completely wrong as mines a mk2 but i would have thought set up was the same

Check that the outer cables are connected together properly, under the tank, where the main throttle cable connects to the carb, and oil pump cables.

gwyn could be right on this one, i had the same problem last week, the cable outer had pulled out of the splitter and so had no adjustment left on the cable. Just push it in and check the adjustment. Jon

Am i right in saying, that when the engine is cold and the cables dis-connected that both marks should line up?

not sure about when disconnected but re connect the cables warm the bike up then when its warm using the adjuster line the two marks up when on tick over when you rev the bike you should see the rocker turn anti clockwise opening the valve then the two marks should line up again as it settles
hope this helps
