Mk3 Clutch set up

Hope someone can help with my clutch problem.
I've replaced the clutch plates and the bearing & bush the clutch basket sits on and I now have a problem with getting the clutch to work. The only difference with my Mk2.2 that I remember is the bowed ring at the bottom of the basket - its fitted as it says in the service manual.
The last two plates (1 steel and one friction) seem to sit too far out of the basket and so the movement created by the lever is not enough to move the outer part of the clutch.
A few questions
Is there a trick to the bowed ring
Do I have a ball bearing missing which sits next to the rod (the service manual does not show one).
Thanks for any advice.
