Strange noises

hi - I noticed at the weekend that when my bike is at idle and the clutch is out the tickover is quite lumpy with a kind of knocking, if I pull the clutch lever in the knocking effect goes and the tickover is less lumpy. I thought it may be the balance shaft, but
a) surely that would be the same no matter what I did with the clutch
b) the bike has only done 8000 kilometers

is this something I should be worrying about ? I'm sure it's done it since I bought it but if work needs doing I would rather know than let it get worse...

Thanks

Ed

any thoughts on this guys ? Is it likely that the balance shaft is on it's way, or just a clutch release bearing thing ???

Thanks

Ed

my mk2 22k kms does that, if I remember rightly the back wheel goes round on the stand in neutral too....

I think it something to do with drag in the clutch (its wet plate), I'm fairly sure my GSXf did something similar but was less noticable due to...

1) 4 cylinders
2) 750cc
3) 4 stroke
4) heavier wheel.

I'm sure someone will correct if i'm wrong

:?: i'd be inclined to think there could be a problem with main bearings. maybe by pulling the clutch in might take end float from the crank, therefore stopping the knocking. this could also could affect the 2 outer crank seals( these need to be in good nick in order for the bike to run tip top) this same problem occurs in motor vehicles with too much end float in the crankshaft. when the clutch is applied the release bearing depresses the pressure plate & pushes the crank foward, therefore taking up the play. hope this helps.

Every Honda that I have ever owned has had a bit of clutch rattle that on tickover that stops when you pull the lever in.
This go's for my CRM up to a CRF1000 I owned from new, it is just a characteristic and I am sure nothing to worry about, my CRF 450 has a louder rattle than my CRM and the 450 is only 10 months old.
The clutch on a bike is on the end of a gearshaft not the crankshaft as in a car, which is what an earlier e-mail may have got wrong when diagnosing the mains.

Russell.

Hi Ed,

Im with Russell on this one - my old 500/4 did exactly the same thing. If the main bearings are on their way out they will be noisy as hell ALL the time and not just when you pull the clutch in.

Nothing to worry about,

i would sugest checking the clutch center nut has not worked loose or that the clutch basket is worn had the same problem on my old TS250X

Its the clutch - lots of bikes do the same. As long as you change the gearbox oil regularly and use a good spec - see tech posts here for advice, it'll be fine. (That helps keep the balance shaft happy too).
