Balancer Shaft

Hi does anyone know if the balancer shaft it interchangable between mk's?

I had a quick look but couldn't find the answer. I might be getting confused with another forum, but is there a "what parts are interchangable with what mk's" post?

Cheers Christian.

With very little work one of these could be made to fit, they do a 25mmx 35mmx 50 mm long, so long enough to cut a couple out of.

How would they stand up to the task???? Hell of a lot cheaper though.

I've put a mk 2 shaft into my mk 3. When I started the engine it knocked like the mains had failed.

I can see that the bearings are all the same, I just wated to know if they are weighted diferently or something.

Has anyone got any ideas on this balancer shaft?

I have pulled the engine apart and there doesn't apear to be anything wrong with it. Most annoying the engine had never been apart before.

Still a freshen up is not going to do it any harm.

I am having an engine fully overhauled and am changing the balancer shaft as a routine part, (the balancer shaft removed looked great but am changing everything that runs on or directly in bearings).

If you need a shaft (from an AR) I would sell it for £40 after I get the engine back in next week or so.

A lot of people just immobilise the shaft, this improves the throttle response, for a smidgeon more vibration.

I want to keep the balancer shaft. I think it is part of the appeal of the engine.

The balancer shaft bearings had gone and when I pulled the shaft out it had, had it. I had a good shaft from a mk2 so put it in. I ran the bike and bled the oil pump. When I started the bike for the second time it had a nasty rattle when idleing. I thought I hadn't bled the oil pump and ballsed the main bearings. I pulled the engine apart and all looked in ok condition.

So before I put the engine back together I wanted to know if there is any difference between the balancer shafts from different mk's. Something was causing the rattle.

I don't think there is a fundemental difference between the balance shafts though the Mk1 certainly has a different shape.

Ok thank you. I'll put it back together and keep an eye out for some thing else.

Any ideas?

Have you lined up the marks on the drive side of the balancer shaft and crank :?:

Yeah the shaft was timed up right. I'll put it back together and see what happens.

Thanks Christian.
