FUEL CONTAMINATION

Storage of bike and fuel systems over the winter (what winter you might add) has always been an interesting subject, with premix and without.

Do you:
1. Drain fuel tanks and carb
2. Keep tanks and carb full

Well for 4 months I kept all the ARs and RD drained with fuel in tanks, no problems whatsoever.

The little IT 175 on premix was also drained, but would not start with new fuel in it, the carb was full of green slime on everything, the jets were all blocked, so what happened, why all the gunge in the carb, and why all green.

It would have been impossible to clean by hand, nothing would get the slime off the inside of the float bowl or clean the jets.

The only good thing is I bought an ultrasonic cleaner with heater last year and have never used it, WOW, it was cranked up to 65 degrees C and cleaning solution added, the carb was stripped and immersed.

After 15 minutes everything looked like new, and it now runs great, glad I bought one.

I never drain anythin over winter an never seem to have problems. Start them occasionally.

Seems you drained everything, then had problems. :?

Probably best not draining :D

Hhmmee, interesting, I never drain the bikes as such, but however I do turn off the fuel a couple of hundred yards before home and drain the carb that way. I also dreg the brakes for that last little bit as well, this gets a bit of heat into the disc and calliper which evaporates any trapped moisture, IMO.
I have never had a problem starting any of my bikes.
I wonder if your storage area has a high moisture level, or the I T's carb bits are just more susceptible to ver-de-gree.
The ultra sonic looks the mutts danglies, I might have to invest in one of them myself.

Hi Fushy,

I get confused easily due to getting older, even today I woke up before I went to bed.

Never rode friday on a wednesday but I do remember riding 150 miles to brands hatch for a track day (£300) and was told by the security guard at the gate that they were closed and that they also had a trackday "yesterday".

The bikes are all feel different, they all sound different..................even though all standard.
