Main Jet

I have a MK1 here that is smoking quite heavily. I'm going to check some of the obvious thing oil pump, float height etc.
The main jet is 140, I believe it should be 132. I seam to remember being told in the past to change the main jet in intervals of 5, so if I want to go down a size I would change the 140 for a 135. Is this correct or should I be changing 1 size at a time?
