oil seal

Post by tatters » 20 Jun 2007, 14:48

Here's one for those of you that do your own work on your bikes.
what is involved in sorting my oil leak from the front sproket ?
is it a home job or pay someone ?
and has anyone bought one of those workshop manuals from leasure trail? and does it cover said leak ?

this bike is costing me a bloody fortune.......
am determind to sort it out and register it on the road as want to experiance the good old days of trail riding.
NOT FAIR.

The Oil leak is most likely coming from the seal over the output shaft, Remove the front sprocket, providing the chain is not too tight, you should be able to do this without removing the chain, Behind the sprocket you will find a spacer that should slide off the shaft, chances are the spacer will have a groove worn in it from the seal, the seal will also be worn. You should be able to prise the seal out with a screwdriver, you will possibly destroy it in the process, be prepared to buy a new seal!
I managed to get a new seal from a local bearing supplier, the new seal was not the same size as the original one but 1mm smaller on the inside diameter, this made it tighter on the worn spacer!
When you replace the spacer, check that there is an O ring on the Output shaft before the spacer goes on, this seals the spacer to the shaft.

The LT manual is available to download from this site, click 'manual' in my signature to take you there!

I replaced mine a few weeks back, just remove the front sprocket and use a small screwdriver and hit it across the seal. this will deform it and you can hook it out. when replaceing the new one wrap some tape around the splines so as not to damage the new seal and tap it home. Job done and will be about 5 mins.
