Dodgy Thread in Gearbox Drainer - helicoil?

Post by IanT » 12 Mar 2008, 09:53

Changed Oil in gearbox recently and found to my dismay bits of ali thread round the bolt. guess i did it up a bit too tight last time. Bolted in again okay and hasn't leaked but wondering if I'll be as lucky next oil change. anybody had this problem before?
can the thread be helicoiled? in or out of the frame? or should I just plug it with some araldite? err help

i had the same problem but on the oil level indercator bolt on the side of engine casing..
drilled 7.2mm and tapped m8..
im thinking you could do this on drain plug... :?:
but you will need engine out if your guna drill it i guess as you will get ali inside engine.. :?
if it aint leaking just leave it till you rebuild engine ??
or maybe now could be rebuild time :D

nick (sure some guys on here could help you out with this im sure most have done this at one time)
if you aint coming off you aint riding hard enough!

you could put some ptfe tape around it, that will hold it for now. the drail bolt is M12x1.25 a very fine thread. so you may want to find an engineering place to do it rather than buy the kit yourself just for one helicoil. Jon

thanks for the advice...think i'll leave it for the moment as it isn't leaking. i'll try to forget about it (should be easy :) ) until next oil change, and deal with it then.
