Pipes usually come chrome or nickel plated. This seems to be the trend anyway.

and you'll be verry lucky to find a chromer who will chrome a used 2 stroke pipe anyway as i will ruin his mix. if you can get it spotlessly clean inside they may think about it but don't hold out hope. Jon

Hi Nabz, me dear old dad is into classic Brit stuff, and apart from what has been said already, finding a good plater in the first place is a lottery! It seems several 'word of mouth' recommendations is the way to go.
Theres a few very good fabricators, (even maybe yerself from what youve mentioned already), how about seeing if they could copy your pipe, but in stainless steel? Thatd polish up and should, in theory, last forever.
I phoned the Ramblers today, but the bloke on the phone just went on and on....

I think i remember reading something about that thermalkote many years ago, isnt it a powder coating that is capable of withstanding exhaust manifold temps? should be quite hardwearing.

id love a chrome or nickel plated exhaust but i think they look cack as soon as they get scratched so will stick with my rusting dep... its adds a certain "used" look to it

Titanium would be nice. And would last for ever too.

I used to have a big sheet of 0.8mm titanium, but it all got made into a robotwars robot, and bent.

how difficult is it to weld titanium? ive never had the opurtunity or necescity. would be a lovely project to have a go though wouldnt it!

i presume some special welding wire would be required. I presume argon would still be ok as the inert atmospheric gas?

Hi Vilguy, Titanium would be ace for an exhaust, I,m on the case. It is a very brittle material to work with, but it may anneal like alloy. We have some ex F1 guys next door to us, they,ll know. I do know you use argon as the shielding gas, and a thin strip of titamium sheet, the sheet you use to make the exhaust from, as filler wire. I have welded titanium and it welds quite easily. If anyone has an old exhaust to donate to cut to make the pattern, and if I can acquire some titanium sheet I,ll give it a go. We also need someone who knows how to pack the exhaust with whatever you pack it with, read it a couple of times and it will make sense. I,m up for it,is anyone else.
