it may as you said be old, a little bit of metal shavings could be considered normal but depends how much.
if it is excessive - the metal shavings could be part of the problem you described in the other thread
- shot piston rings, does it feel down on power? and id you check your spark plug yet?

regarding the chain - is there a split link (clip) on the old chain? If so just unclip it with some pliers.
if not you will have to grind off the rivet ends of the master link or use a chain breaker tool.

Or if the chain is Sha**ed, just cut it of (carefully) with an angle grinder

gywn i see you and i think alike!

thats the way i did it.. only not carefully,

lesson learnt - dont lend your angle grinder to your dad who thinks it would work better if he snapped the guard off it.

520 chain is the correct size mate, either be posh and use a proper rivet con link (naahhh) or the easy way is to fit the split link type. make sure you fit the split link retainer so that it is pointing backwards... if you get what i mean. this helps prevent it coming off and errrrr... hurting

I don,t think that the rings would have any bearing on the condition of the oil in the gear box [separate systems].
You can get one of them little super magnets of eblag very cheap. The cr@p will the stick to the drain plug and you can then evaluate the extent of the problem ,if any.Change the oil every couple of rides for a while to see if the problem continues.
