A total Newb with some total newb questions.
A total Newb with some total newb questions.
Hey all. I just picked myself up one of these rare cool bikes. Problem is I know nothing about it. There aren't many of them over here (Ontario, Canada) and there are even fewer people who know anything about them. Bike was listed in the classifieds as a CR250R Enduro. It took some searching to find out what the bike was actually called.
I'm glad I found this site cause I think I'd be lost otherwise. And I'm probably going to ask a lot of dumb questions since this is also my first two stroke. So I apologize in advance for any stupid questions I may ask.
Well anyway, here are my first few dumb questions:
First, my ownership says I have a 91 which should be mk2, correct? While looking around your site I've seen that mk2s have inverted forks. Mine are conventional. Also according to the model history the oil in the frame started with the mk2 and mine has a place to put oil in the frame. The vin starts with MD24100XXXX if this helps. Could somebody help me identify this bike?
Here's the pics:

I take it this is where you pour in the oil to be mixed with the gas, correct? How do you know how much oil is in there or do you have to top it up at each fill up? Also how much oil does it hold?

Any insight into this machine you guys can give me is appreciated.
Thanks.

welcome to the site - you'll find a ton of info on here, people appreciate it if folks use the search facility first then ask questions that aren't cover already.
Nice bike! blends in well with your truck - almost missed it altogether!
Also where did you get that funky looking 'swirling type' towbar on the truck in the last picture!!! I want one

Re: A total Newb with some total newb questions.
z1k,you are the present owner of a mk1 crm 250(and a very tidy one at that! 8) ).
the 2t oil is held in the frame same as a mk2(frames a virtually identical),not sure on capacity of the tank,i think its around 1-1.5 ltrs, you should easily be able to get 4 tanks of gas/petrol used before needing to refill the tank,i generally tend to top mine up though after every ride.there is a low 2t oil warning lamp on the speedo dial(top l/h/side has oil written next to the led warning lamp) but i wouldn't rely on it as these bikes are knocking on a bit
best man too talk to on here for technical info on the mk1 is knackered mk1 hes just coming to the end of rebuilding his mk 1 project and knows most of the stuff you'll probably require
oh yes, welcome to the forum mate

Re: A total Newb with some total newb questions.
Welcome. As Slider says you have got a very tidy looking Mk1. No need to worry about it being a Mk1 as opposed to a Mk2 as they are pretty much identical in performance but it is a good thing that it's so apperently tidy
Just make sure that the 2 stroke oil you put in is suitable for injector systems and it's probably worth changing the gearbox oil to be sure (any good 2 stroke gearbox oil).
Any questions post them on here and get a copy of the basic manual that is available on different sites.
Looks like your back brake could do with some brake fluid and possibly needs bleeding as it has got so low. Might as well do the front while you are at it as brake fluid does not store when opened.

Re: A total Newb with some total newb questions.
Ok thanks guys.
The pictures make the bike look a bit better than it actually is. The previous owner decided to do a spray bomb paint job on it which looks pretty bad from up close. I'll just end up sanding and repainting the plastics I can't get over here and replacing the rest. But otherwise it is in really good shape.
For the oil I'm using Bel-Ray Si-7 synthetic. The front and back brakes have brand new fluid in them because the PO had them flushed and rebuilt the calipers. The reason the reservoir looks empty is because it's actually filled to the brim. I have sorted this out since the pic.
I got this bike for a decent price so I'm prepared to have to put a bit of work into it to get it going. The PO is a member of a local forum and was very forthcoming with info. The PO put some money into it after getting it off the importer. (Rebuilt calipers, new tires, new bearings in swingarm and rear wheel, Cooling system flush) He then rode it down his street and heard a knock in the engine, got pissed and put it up for sale for cheap. I have since only been able to replicate the sound when shifting too low in the rev range. (I've read on here that this is a common noise on these.) But the engine sounds great otherwise. No vibration, ticking, knocking at all. I'm going to try and get out to a gravel pit today and give her a good run to check her out.
I've tried downloading the manual that I've seen posted here but I can't seem to get it to work. It opens in adobe but then freezes up if I try and scroll down. I've tried numerous times now to no avail. Does anyone know of any other places to find it? Or maybe have it saved and email it to me?
Thanks for all the help.

Have fun

It might be nothing more than chain slap. It's a single cylinder bike after all. Riding around with other off-roaders you hear the same death-rattle all the time, oddly enough at the same time as you can see their drive chains flailing about.Z1K wrote:He then rode it down his street and heard a knock in the engine, got pissed and put it up for sale for cheap.
