Lights misbehaving + engine cut out - electrics?

Post by ttr » 06 Dec 2008, 09:39

Hi there

Yesterday had some trouble with the crm - stuck in deadly deadly impenetrable traffic, the lights sort of flickered a bit then went considerably more dim - but would periodically flicker brighter again. Went on my merry (was well lit where I was stuck..), went to the gym and that, came back to it, still flickering, but stayed on brighter for a bit. Few mins later, I'm going along quite happily when the engine sputters for a half second, and dies. Next I know I'm in a layby swearing.

Wouldn't immediately start again - but after a while, it did fire up fine, but would die again after a second or two.

My thoughts are probably rectifier and/or generator.. But not 100% on how to test these. Step one probably to test for a spark - is this in any way different on a 2t/kickstart bike?

Could it just be fouled plugs? That'd be nice and cheap :P

Cheers & kind regards

TTR.

a fouled plug is a good starting place. generators are pretty robust according to FMtB and there are more fragile bits further along the line.
Before you start ripping things apart to check them, do these first - remove and clean the sidestand switch & the kill switch. If either of these have a fault then you could have the problems you are finding.
check there is a good conection to the big round condensor behind the headlights, because it this is removed you will have no lights at all.

Do check the connections and switches as Jon says these are the most likely culprits.

The prime suspect for a connection fault is going to be the 3 phase connector under the seat , it carries on to the reg/rec ,[ 3 way connector , yellow wires ] that particular connection , due to it's location and job , gets quite a hammering ,take it apart, carefully it's another design of clip again  and give it a good clean, look for any signs of arcing.
You may also wish to take of the kill switch, another troublesome item .
It's also very worth while to start at the Magneto, with a cleaning , trouble shooting service , and work your way through the various connections , be warned though , Mr Honda bought a job lot of random connectors , and fitted them all to CRMs  .
The housing for the mag , gets very mucky inside , and the drain down hole is invariably blocked , clean and spray with your favourite flavour of service oil.

Found out another guy at my college owns a CRM - albeit a MKII - since he doesn't ride it on the road he let me blag his rectifier just to check if that was the problem before I started troubleshooting - as it turns out, it was - got an Electrexworld one - had the fun old job of fitting it - but now all is well! Took the time to swap out the old spark plug as it was fouled as hell - running much better now!

Cheers for the suggestions guys!
