Thinking of buying a CRM250AR

Post by Richparker » 05 Jan 2009, 11:34

Hi
I'm Richard and live in Leicester. I already have a CRF250x Enduro bike but have always liked the look of an AR model. I'm thinking about having a go at some LDTs this year , a couple of mates have got a GasGas Pampera and a Yamaha Serow and I wondered if anyone knows if the CRM would be any good?
I realise that I could have a go on the CRF but I would prefer the engine characteristics of a two stroke. Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

:D Hi Rich
Fantastic though the AR is , it doesn't quite cut the mustard as an L.D.T er , i have campaigned one for a couple of years in such events.
Not saying its bad , just that IT would struggle to be competitive against your mates on their more appropriate choice of bikes.
The chassis gives to little lock to lock turning, it's higher Cof G makes balancing that much harder, the AR in particular has just to much bottom end grunt , that on a trials tyre makes it difficult to get it to hook up , without dragging the back brake all the time.
As a compromise though it's fantastic on the bits in between the sections where your mates will be bent up double on their short @rse mounts .
If you only want a great day out and your finishing position doesn't bother you to much then that,s fine , enjoy that silky motor on the trails.
Gosh, i havn't done a very good job of selling the bike have i  no honestly mate if you can blag a ride on one for a days green laneing you may be outing the CRF . although the lectric boot probably makes up some shortfall.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. To be honest all I'm after is a good day out, where I come doesn't bother me that much.My main concern is how well a AR would drive low down. We also go to the Alps once or twice a year and some of the climbs are quite technical and I need a bike that would be able to pull from quite low down in the rev range without it spinning up.I think maybe the Pampera would be the ideal bike but I don't really rate the build quality and like I said I have always fancied an AR.
Maybe I'll just keep an eye for a nice AR and give it a go!
Cheers
Richard

Oh the AR has the grunt for that no prob, what you may find though is you need to adapt your technique slightly and just steady the plot on the back brake slightly, which sounds perverse going up hill, but it just allows the AR to then find grip that will astound you , and it will pull from nowhere in the revs range. do not , go to low on the final drive gearing as this exaserbates the wheel spin effect .
