Running in procedure

Post by jim_CRM » 09 Aug 2009, 21:00

Hello, im sure this has been asked before but ive spent half a hour searching and havnt found any figures. Basically i just want to know what procedures you went though whilst running in your bike (crm 250). Ive just done a top end rebuil on mine, its running on premix, doing it 150ml to 5 litres for now. Just want to know how you should run it it, gentley build up the revs? how many hours use, how many miles, should you let it cool down fully every now and again etc etc.

Ive only had experiance running it 2 stroke 250 motocross bikes, and that involves half a day untill your preety much flat out.

Any help would be great
Thanks
Jim

Jim, 150ml of oil is about a 33/1 mix, which is quite generous, and paradox ally, not necessarily insurance against a seizure again.
More oil for a given measure of fuel, actually means less, spontaneous, combustible fuel in the mix, there for, you end up running lean, lean means heat, heat means seizure  .
IMHO, a 40/1 or 125ml to 5ltr mix is more than adequate, you then start slowly building the revs and and load on the engine, in short cycles, of use, and cooling, checking the plug for the correct colour.
You need to have the engine , working BUT, not loading up either, you will feel the engine start to free up , by the second tank full of fuel, when you can start to extend the run time, avoiding constant throttle riding, also blip the choke on before throttling back if road and traffic conditions allow.
A well run in engine should give years of trouble free use.

Thanks alot for that mike, just the advise i was looking for, just filled the tank with that mixture :-( worth draining it out and doing a lower mixture or is ok it for one tank do you think? Last thing i want is a seizure. Using top putoline mx5 oil which i use in my motocross bike so a decent oil.

Thanks for the advise matey, spot on.

Cheers
Jim

:) Yes, use the tank full of fuel up, in short stages, and that should be fine.

Hi I am not sure what other forum members have experienced but I ran my 250 in on a motul mineral based oil for a few tanks and then switched over to a fully synthetic, I when i ran my bike in I just used it normally making sure she was warmed up properly and making sure she did not get over reved, and not to hold it at a high rev eithier just accelerating through the gears. From memory I think the idea of using a mineral based oil is that it does not leave too much of a shine on the sleeve and piston leaving it slightly course, helping with the cooling.
I have ran a few 2 strokes in theis way and they have all turned out to be great bikes.
But I am no expert.
Thanks
Andy

Jim, i run Stihl, 2t oil in every 2t motor i use[ lots of chain saws, strimmers blowers etc] and also both CRMs , never had any problems with it, and it works out, £5ltr, so reasonable cheap as well.
It's also, the same colour as MX5, BUT FOR THE LABEL SAYING IT'S DIFFERENT, it could be the same stuff.

:D Most garden centres, or hire/plant shops should sell it. BTW, You can also buy the same product in pre-packed 100ml shots, which, can be very handy, I run, and have done so for many years, this oil at 50/1 without issue.
The measured shots work out dearer, but horses for courses.
