MK3 seized up

Post by superbob » 27 Jun 2010, 18:18

My mk3 seized up whilsed going to work this morning I was holding it flat out it top gear so my fault there. The strange thing is that it has loads of oil in it and the pump is working well the radiator is in good condition the temperator light didnt come on and the engine sounds ok but it is a bit down on power. I am going to repair it myself what is the best course of action to take should I get a rebore or a new cylinder and how do I know if the cylinder has been bored out before. What is a good quality piston to fit and were can I find cheaper parts that lesure trail?. Thanks for reading any help will be really helpfull.

First thing is to take the barrel and head off. You can then see what kind of damage you have. If there is still some compression then it might be pretty minor.

Have a look and post photos on here if you can or describe.

Then we can discuss options. Almost certainly new piston ~ £100 + gaskets ~ £30. If need rebore then + ~£50.

Very unlikely that you will need a new barrel. If you do then get a secondhand one, and rebore it if neccessary. New are v.v. expensive.

Right I'v taken the head and the barrel of and inspected them it has seized up a very small amount so Im having it bored out and a over size piston. I'm still trying to find out why it has seized tho I'm going to strip the carb to see if theres any bloked jets or any faults what might make it run lean. Also what can I do to make the bike to make it more reliable.
