Has anyone succesfully connected a "SATMAP" to a crm

Post by CRM3 » 06 Jan 2011, 18:51

I have looked at all the other postings regards connecting a gps,but has anyone connected a "SATMAP" gps unit to there CRM electrics.
If so,has it worked ok ?
Someone surely has,its a very expensive unit and I dont want to risk blowing its cork !
Lets just get out there, and trail it.

Not a Satmap, but, before my eldest Son and Heir allowed my Garmin Nuvi, 550 to go walk about, I cobbled together a disused 12v Battery drill.
Sawing of the actual useless drill section, I resin set waterproof 12v socket into the remains of the handle section.
This unit came with 3x rechargeable batteries, that just click in and out.
After many position test runs, I settled for mounting it on the Handlebars, utilising the bar clamps.
A short lead was used to connect the unit to the battery, [ Blackberry type tip], this also has a fast blow fuse in the other tip end. This gave all day running, at Maximum screen brightness, and I carried a spare battery in my back pack, though it was never used.
The unit was mounted using one of those cheap ebay, £1.00, 17mm ball mounts[ warning] I set a short piece of metal in some epoxy resin inside the hollow section of this, as one of them broke, but that was on a Mountain bike, which is probably subject to higher frequency vibrations.
The Satmap comes with a really good lanyard as well, but by the feck, OS maps are expensive.
If I was to bother with another unit, I would probably go for the Satmap unit, whether, moody Open source mapping is available, nudge nudge, wink , wink, of the inter web now I don,t know.
I think you have to mess about with Babel software programmes to get anything else to run.
Make sure you create a folder on the PC with all the original programmes in it, BEFORE, loading any other software, better to be safe.
From memory, you have to give each map set a unique title to allow it to be recognised.

Im just thinkin out loud here, shoot me down when need be...

I have pretty good basic knowledge of vehicle electrics but aint no bright spark, hahaa.

Why cant a tiny 12 volt moped battery be fitted on crm to power any accessories like satmap, phone charger, satnav etc. Could it not be trickle charged from the 12 volt rectified current with a diode and manual switch to control it? It wouldnt need to be chargin all the time especially if it was fully charged before the mission

Along time ago Kirnowkrusty, who was a electronics engineer, posted a how to do, item on wiring in such gizmo's, whether it has now tootled off into the ether I know not, I t might be worth checking his old posts.

"Twisted Nuts" way of thinking, is what I want to achieve.
I know I can hook up a battery, but haveing it trickle charged from the bike is the ideal set up.
Has anyone else done this ?
Lets just get out there, and trail it.

Found this,
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4301&p=26234#p26234
but, it's not really what you were looking for.
Somewhere, I remember KK, posting "an how to" for adding power requiring ancillary equipment.
Is the battery built in to the SATMAP units?, I purchased spare battery for the Garmin of Eblag for about £15.
There is also a "rather crude" Rolson, multi charger, that runs off an AA battery, but I think it has the Blackberry type tip in the kit.
In essence, being " independent" of the bikes electrical system is probably the easiest, and least scary option to explore.
IMO

Yes thanks for the link, but fixing it to the bike is not a problem.
Might have to put an independant 12v battery in the airbox, and maybe a solar trickle charger unit.
Not what I wanted, but unless someone has any other ideas on this ?

Seen this,
http://www.satmap.com/products/accessories.html
Says you can use AA batteries, in the caddy, rechargeable 2900Mah ones of Ebay work out about £1.25, a pop.

Dunno how a satmap gets its power, but alls i meant is for a 12 volt supply without affectin the generator etc.

We need an electrical nerd to tell us how. Heres my uneducated plan...

Diddy 12 volt battery sited wherever,
Tee into lightin live mainly cos that appears to be the highest rating,
This wire would probably then need a resistor of some kind to achieve a decent but not too high current, 35 watt or the like, then an in-line switch,
A diode so no power from the battery affects generator (dunno if it would or not)

Then take another live off battery for the accessory...

Would it work?

Yes, I have seen the power monkey solar unit.
But I think I will go for an independant battery and solar trickle charger.Seems the safer option.
Then I can just plug it in, via a waterproof ciggy lighter socket.
Lets just get out there, and trail it.

some of the newer GPS's can give you a 12hr battery life if you put them in powersaver mode.

especially the hand held units, which you could easily get a mountain bike bracket and mount it to you crm handlebars.

why complicate things with a battery on the bike when you can just rely on the GPS's battery?

I think these ones will only turn on the screen if you press a button or if a direction is approaching.

I agree I have an ETrex perfect for following or back tacking, runs on 2 AA batteries very easy to change on the trail, and very robust, why bother with messing with the electrics??

I use a GPS60 on 2 AA battery's, it lasts all day but I carry a spare set just in case.

I plan a route using Memorymap and downlaod as a track in to the GPS, then simply follow a black line on the screen....easy ;) ;)

Its not the best GPS, so when I'm in an area I don't know very well I carry paper maps as back-up.

It works for me, I'll be leading our TRF group on a C2C run in a week and a 2 day trip to the IoM at the end of April. :D :D
