stator problem

Post by silver fox » 14 Apr 2011, 11:57

Hi Guys
can anybody help with advice and or parts.one of the pulse generator bolts has worked it's self loose from my AR , it took a chunk out of the rim of the fly wheel/magneto.first signs of the problem were poor starting and would only start with a push when hot.cranking it by hand there is no spark to be seen and it will no longer start by kicking but did with a push.
I don't know what other damage has been done yet as the allen bolts holding the pulse generators wont come out stopping me from fully removing the stator.the loose bolt ended up jammed in the casing behind the balancer shaft weight.I have done a search but none of the problems seem to be physically damaged ones.

Many thanks

Silver Fox

That sounds pretty bad tbh and never heard of that before. has the motor been rebuilt ? if so by whom and when. can you put pictures up so we can see the extent of the damage ?

I have rebuilt the engine myself so hold myself responsible.could a heavy wack on the magneto reduce the effect the magnet has on making enough power to start the bike with the kick start ?
My first attempt at uploading pictures, hope it works.

;) A good clean might do wonders, and a light sanding to remove excessive deposits.

Thanks Mike
I will give it all a good clean.Do you think it is possible the rotor could have lost some of it's magnetism ?

unlikely, start with a good clean of all components, lightly abrade, air gap to impulse areas.
Check connection trail up to, and including the high tension lead and cap.
Put a NEW, cheap B8RS plug in the cap, and check for the strength of the spark.
Even if it's a poorish looking spark, it should still be adequate to ignite the mixture, so your problems may well lay elsewhere.
Keep us posted.

I don't know much about how these things work but I think the brake in the magnet is causing problems. I think you need a new rotor.

Cheers guys

Where would i get another rotor from ? I work for a Honda car/bike dealer & tried to cross reference the
part number from the AR parts book on this site.

:( I put a bit more thought to this and it may well also be that rotor is now also unbalanced.
There is nothing to lose from what I previously posted though, but be aware of any serious vibration.

Maybe not such bad news - looked into this a bit further and KAE74* is a Mk3 code. The rotor off a Mk3 is the same part no. :) .

I have a Mk3 rotor amongst the various engine parts in my loft  . PM'd. You can send it back for a refund if you find the rotor is not the problem (- cost of postage ;) ).

Others out there may have this part :?: .

As far as I'm aware it can only be two other problems (unless your bike has developed faults outside of the area being discussed).

1). Coil is broken. Can this be tested for resistance :?: .

2). One or both of the pickups is damaged. Quite likely for at least the one that's been whalloped :?: .
