stoped running after service =suddenly=

Post by BaNZ » 23 Jun 2011, 15:30

Hi guys! I bought CRM250 MK2 1993 not so long ago. Immediately I started to ride, cause I needed wheels for my job,
so I had no time to perform regular service tasks. Honda runs just great in any weather in any conditions from the first
or second touch of the kickstart. But I had one little problem with killswitch, but it was easy to fix - a little clean did
the trick.

Well, I rode almost 1000kms, then decided to fix the clutch actuator lever leak (just seal was worn, no engine pressure)
and to do necessary service.

So I removed clutch cover, clutch plates, clutch actuator lever, replaced it's seal (it's not just simple O-ring,
it's some kind of cuff 12x3x18 but 12x5x18 will also fit), changed gearbox oil (Motul 10w40), changed coolant (some
kind of expensive japanese brand), changed spark plug (NGK BR9EGV), assembled all back, bled oil pump and started
trying to start up the engine.

It was kinda difficult and didn't want to start. However, I put back old spark plug, and engine made succesfully
start after a dozen or so kicks. Put new spark plug again, succesful start. Then I let engine to warm up. When it
warmed up, I take bike to test ride. Seemed it rode better then before, so I left motorcycle outside my garage to let
it cool down.
After 30-40 mins I tried to start from cool state - "no probs" honda said and rumbled from first kick.
"Good girl, Honda!" - I thought and rode home, where I left bike for 3 or more hours, while I walked with my gf.

When I back home I specially did another very-cool-start to avoid any unexpected behavior the next day morning. "No
probs" Honda rumbled again. "Cool" was my last though before I went home.

But the next day morning damn thing completely refused to start! OMG and WTF?!! I was a bit surprised and significantly dissapointed.

I and my bro did a LOT of kicks with no response at all. Ok, I did a quick look in the carb (it was pretty clean), looked main jet (it was clean), checked float chamber and float idle (everything is ok), checked spark plugs (sparkle well both), checked oil and fuel hoses on it's route (all going to it's places), but my bike is completely cold after all. With choke or without.

So I got a cople of main questions.

1)How possibly can it be?
2)What should I do to get my CRM back in line?

ANY help appreciated, I need my transport badly! And I'm totally out of suggestions.

P.S. I'm kinda new to 2t engines and keihin carbs.

Do a search, but turn your fuel off when left for longer periods, a slight leak may flood the engine and then you cannot start.

:?: What plug was in the bike originally.
Remove the plug, engage 1st gear, ignition OFF, push bike around for a short while to vent the crankcase.
Put in a NEW plug of same NB as original.
Fuel on, choke on, DO NOT TWIST THE THROTTLE, ignition on, several full stroke kicks should have her singing.

Original plug was NGK BR7ES with unknown mileage. I'll try what you adviced, but what you mean under "Put in a NEW plug of same NB as original"?
does the bike still have the side stand switch on?
- well, it's on, when side stand down on floor and of, when up.

Yes, I know, but in my case sidestand lamp seems to be ok.

Well, I tried what Mike adviced, and my bike starts! Even with old used spark plug. I took a little ride to buy new BR7ES and installed it. Starts good. Thank you, guys. Love you all.

Btw, here is the picture of my CRM. http://www.imagecross.com/a/image-hosti ... G0039A.jpg Some fancy graphics, though.

Well that's certainly good news.
Very gentle touches of the throttle are required for starting.
I'm a little worried that you're engine requires a 7 plug, this could indicate that it's running excessively rich.
You said the carb was checked, were all the jets standard, and the needle in the middle position?
Standard jetting should allow a NB 8 plug to be used.
Starting a 2 stroke just takes a little learning of a different technique to starting 4 strokes.

as mike states it should definatly be a br8 plug not a 7 but saying that, youre in a different country to us so maybe thats why it still starts and runs ok with a 7 plug
front brakes only slow you down anyway!!!!

Low octane would make it run lean and hot, and this would be exacerbated by a 7 plug, but it spat out the 9egv :!:

"that it's running excessively rich" - yup. I believe it is. I can judge by fuel consumption and condition of old air filter (I bought new one already, but need find a place to oil it up)

"were all the jets standard, and the needle in the middle position?" - can't say for sure, because I did very quick inspection without touching needle at all, as for main jet, I didn't remember it's number.

But I can say for sure, that the mixture screw open for half (or so) turn. From this position " \ " (fully close) to this position " | " (open for what it always was). Hm, and I have full Pro Circuit exhaust system, if it makes any difference.

"youre in a different country to us so maybe thats why it still starts and runs ok with a 7 plug" - I can assume, that is quality of petroleum in my country quiet poor, much worse than in yours, but I have no opportunity to compare.

Give the carb a good clean and check your jetting - http://www.crm250.com/specs.asp

Make sure all your jets are clear.
