counter balance shaft
counter balance shaft
Hi all
Just re-assembling my engine and got to the part where you put the gears on the end of the crank shaft. just wandered what position the counterbalance shaft is rotated to in relation to the crank. I would have thought there would be a couple of marks on the gears to get the crank/counter balance in the right positions? I think what i'm trying to say is, do the crank and counterbalance shaft have to be 'timed'? or is it just installed in any position?
Cheers
Mark

Re: counter balance shaft
From memory, there should be a couple of centre punched marks that aligns the two.

Re: counter balance shaft
I have 2 sets of gears for the engine, neither of the balance shaft gears have a mark on them and only 1 of the crankshaft gears has a center dot mark on it. very strange! is there any other way of timing them?

Re: counter balance shaft
Look at the photo in the FAQs ................
There is no punch mark on the balancer shaft gear but a raised semicircle against the edge of the gears. This lines up with the punch mark on the crank drive gear.

The photo is from a Mk1 which needs another punch mark on the crank drive gear (in line with the Woodruff key) to line up the (underneath) cush drive system that is not present on the other models.

Thanks Knackered, found it now, my one's so small it's hardly noticeable (the raised semi circle that is!) Cheers for all the help.
