To rebuild or to not rebuild

Post by guy » 27 May 2011, 16:12

Hi, I have a mk1 crm250 which inexplicably just stopped running when I was returning to the village. I did have the throttle wide open. Now when I turn her over with the kick start there is no compression. Does this automatically mean something seriously wrong inside the engine? Or is there the outside chance it could be fixed without a rebuild? Any pointers would be gratefully received. Cheers, Guy

BoR +1. You have probably got a partial seizure. You will need to take the cylinder and head off to check what has happened. Probability - rebore, new piston (new rings, gudgeon pin and small end bearing) + gaskets. Cost ~ £150-£170 if you take the top end off and rebuild youself.

You also need to find out what caused the seizure. Was it worn old parts, lean carburation .....................

Where are you in the UK :?: .

Thanks for responses. As I suspected. Quite looking forward to getting spanners out and knuckles scraped, been a long time since I rebuilt my beetle engine...... 1986! Is a top end off do-able without taking the engine out? I am in Donisthorpe De12. Thanks again. Guy
