What is the little wire on the coil? Earth???

Hey guys,
I did check FAQ's so excuse me if this is a dumbass question that has been asked before:
What is the little wire (green / yellow) that clips onto the coil for and where the hell does it go?
I had the bike cut out on me and wouldn't start for a while, then fired up and went ok for 2 mins and cut out again. Managed to get it home and went about sourcing the problem. Fueling is fine (cleaned the carb anyway), changed the spark plug and suppressor cap but still looks as though I'm getting intermittent spark. Check the coil resistance, seems fine. Cleaned kill switch, all connnections etc etc (looks like spaghetti hanging out the front of the bike now!), all ok but still the spark is not constant.
I'm assuming the wire goes to earth but not 100% sure. Checking continuity between the wire and frame I get nothing so it's not reaching earth if that's what it's meant for? But before I go hot-wiring a new earth lead to try solve it, maybe someone can advise if this is the case?
If not, where do I start looking now? My very basic sparky know-how tells me that if something major was stuffed (CDI etc), I'd get no spark at all but I am getting it - very occasionally but it's there!
As a matter of interest, after changing the suppressor cap, she fired 1st kick but cut out straight away, 4-5 kicks later same thing, thereafter nothing which is when I started ripping everything else out to check.
HEEEEEELLLLLPPPPP????!!!!!
