water in engine maybe

Post by martync » 15 Mar 2004, 08:46

I may have asked this before but can't find the post. I'm about to do my clutch and so have the side off the engine. when i pull the oil cap off, in the centre there is a white sludge which suggests water in the oil.
where can this have been caused?

is there a seal somewhere or is it normal (condensation etc) for a little to get into the gear box?

Water in Gearbox

Do you ride through many deep puddles?
if so, the water may be getting in through the gearbox breather pipe, this is welded to the frame near the suspension linkage.
On my first ride, I got stranded in a 2 foot deep puddle & had to push the bike out, this took me a few seconds to do but this was long enough to give me a gearbox full of emulsion!!

Either Breather pipe or worst case is the waterpump seal has blown. If the oil has gone white and milky and feels like the stuff thats in the middle of a milky way, the add a cup full of diesel to the ooil, run till warm and drain, rinse and repeat until clear / clean
Then replace the water pump impeller and seal. You may get away with the seal only but i put money that it has worn the impeller shaft so really need to be done as a pair. (esp from lots of 350 lc's where this was commonplace.

thanks chaps for the water theories on where the water could be coming from.
Is the oil breather actually welded to the frame if so ive not seen this, I thought it was the black rubber pipe coming from the centre of the engine down to underneath the shock???? if it could be this it's not a lot, also the water/coolant isn't going down so I doubt the water pump thingy is knackered but if it is how can you test to see if it is?
And if so is it a hard job to replace/expensive?.

doubt the head gasket and a load of blue smoke would chuff out which it doesn't, seems to run clean as a whistle. so maybe a breather, or cancondensation get to it?
